born to trouble as the sparks fly upward (amilliondays) wrote, @ 2008-01-31 12:30:00
in between classes, an observation
So. TPTB have listened. All shiny and rosy, hmm? Let's be grateful they bothered, but let's not forget:
The Case isn't enough.
It's just an attempt to take away the fangs, the weapons, make us happy so we love them and forgive them and never speak of it again; wash the incident under a rug where it'll never be spoken of in polite company.
It's a nice start, but you don't - honestly - think it fixes anything, do you?
I can guarantee that they don't, or else they would never have done it; they're not in the business of gestures that would actually leave them culpable, much less responsible, for the material they publish.
So yes. I'm grateful. We should all be grateful - grateful that they deigned to give Stephanie something that was not a privilege but a right, according to all narrative logic; grateful they bothered to consider what should have been obvious from the start.
A Case is never enough. Enough is making sure what happened to Stephanie, and to Wonder Woman, and to Sasha Bordeaux, and to Selena Kyle, and to Leslie Thompson, and to Helena Bertinelli, and to Rogue, and to Mystique, and Katma Tui, and to Arisia, and to a list of names that will never, ever, ever end, will never happen again.
So she has a Case now. I don't care. She should've had a Case immediately.
So be grateful that they cared enough to acknowledge our existence, even for a brief moment. But don't forget how long it took them to care.
